Process Specialist Woodyard (Grade7/HRL16/S7)


LOCATION: Ngodwana Mill

Sappi Ngodwana Mill seeks to place a suitably qualified Process Specialist to support the Woodyard team utilising experience and knowledge to run the Woodyard processes at optimal levels and to produce good quality chips.

REPORTING TO:  Production Manager

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review critical performance parameters on a daily basis, addressing items that are deviating from specifications.
  • Keep a historical account of operating parameters, monitors for longer term potential deviations.
  • Accountable for the identification of capital requirements for longer term production efficiencies
  • Mentors, guides and supports operating personnel in achieving the required operating parameters and ensure effective checks are done in the plant.
  • Develop and update best operating practices and safe work procedures for the section in conjunction with the shift superintendents.
  • Review and inspect the operating units on a daily basis for efficient functionality, addressing any potential risks for uninterrupted runnability and timber supplies
  • Investigate timber efficiencies as part of continuous woodyard optimisation and cost reduction
  • Manage the mill FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) system
  • Ensure stockholding (monthly returns) and consolidate diesel consumption spreadsheet at the end of the month.
  • Keep track of valuable quality and production results and draw graphs (monthly) for presentation purposes.
  • Ensure required administration work for entire woodyard section including purchase requisitions, notifications, service acceptances and SAP time administration
  • Relieve production manager as and when necessary and do standbys for woodyard and fibre line #2.
  • Conduct physical timber stock count every Mondays with Timber handling contractor and forestry representative.
  • Effective management of section costs within the allocated budget.
  • Investigate all unplanned downtime, institute corrective actions and complete RCA timeously.
  • Assist with problem solving and corrective actions by facilitating, initiating and participating in team based problem solving. 
  • Ensure training manual material per position is updated regularly and is applicable to current process capabilities
  • Provide training to operational staff
  • Keep abreast with technical knowledge within the section. 
  • Facilitate and co-ordinate the shut-down process and operational tasks during planned outages from an operational perspective.
  • Assists on shut planning, schedules and administration.
  • Liaison with respective suppliers on all chipper wear parts.
  • Ensure good standards are maintained with regards to safety and housekeeping compliance by adhering to company standards.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • BSC Chemical Engineering/BSC Wood Science/BTech Pulp and Paper/BTech Chemical Engineering
  • 8 years' experience within a woodyard/wood handling/ forestry production environment
  • Computer Literate (MS Office Package)
  • SAP knowledge will be advantageous
