Get your hands on a TITAN Multirip for the toughest ripping jobs

TITAN Multirip
Wood-Mizer TITAN's latest multirip offering, the MR200.

With Wood-Mizer TITAN's Multirip range, sawmillers have a multirip solution that any size sawmill can afford and use to boost the bottom line.

A multirip is designed to cut cants into boards and to do so consistently and within very tight tolerances.

Any size sawmill that wants to expand its volume output and cutting accuracy to become more profitable, can use a multirip to achieve these goals.

Beyond expanded volumes and accuracy lie several secondary, but equally important benefits that a multirip can unlock if it is roped into an operation.

Bearings bolted to the frame from the outside makes it easy to replace. The Wood-Mizer TITAN MR3000 and MR5000 multirips are built for the toughest multirip tasks.

A quick guide on how a multirip can add to the bottom line?

The payback that a multirip offers lies across several fronts that in total can assist a sawmill to improve output, reduce costs and grow profits.

To unpack each of these in brief

Play to individual strengths: A bandsaw sawmill can produce accurate boards. But it takes more work to get from a cant to board with a band mill. Simplify the process by harnessing the speed and accuracy of a bandmill to break logs into cants, and then use the strength, simplicity, and accuracy of a multirip to saw the cants into finished boards.

Do more work with less: A multirip has fewer moving parts to maintain than a multi-head band resaw that does a similar job. Fewer stoppages and less maintenance are money in the pocket.

Less resharpening - A multi-head resaw typically uses several blades in a shift. A multirip can work across shifts without blade changes. Although the multirip sawblades upfront costs are higher there is less resharpening and fewer delays to change blades reduces the workload on saw shops and more uptown during shifts to cut more boards.

Reduce labour costs - Introducing a multirip can reduce the labour bill with fewer workers needed to man fewer machines and to handle a simpler material flow through the mill.

Reduce maintenance costs - Using multiple machines to produce boards can hike up maintenance costs. A multirip simplifies the operation with fewer machines needed to produce higher volumes, which in total adds to the bottom line.

Reject boards eat into profits - Boards that are not the right size will not sell. Well set up multirips always cuts straight. Straight boards sell well.

Higher yields and efficiency - Higher accuracy empowers a sawmill to reduce its wet target size, which potentially trumps the benefits that thin kerf bandsaws provide on their own. With reduced within-board sawing variation, less waste and higher yields from each board, profits grow.

Improved material and waste handling - A simpler material flow that a multirip offers will simplify material handling and waste removal processes to boost efficiency and slash costs.

When is it a good time to choose a multirip?

To increase volumes is the first part of the answer.

The second part requires a sawmiller to ask which market he or she supplies to?

A multi-head resaw will be a better choice for a sawmill that generally cuts thinner boards and where the cumulative kerf effect on yield is more prominent.

A multirip would generally be the preferred choice for sawmills that cut structural timber or supply to remanufacturers.

In this instance, the accuracy, high volumes, speed, and low maintenance of a multirip will offset the loss of yield from a wider kerf.

The key benefit of a multirip is to cut cants into boards and do so consistently and within very tight tolerances. The heavy and robust top and bottom saw arbors packed with circular blades for precise cutting.

Why choose a TITAN multirip?

Many machine manufacturers build multirips. But few multirips can match Wood-Mizer TITAN's Multirip range.

The design of the entire range is centred around the core objective to deliver the cutting accuracy and size tolerances needed by timber producers that invest in the range.

The proper alignment of the feed rollers and arbours plays a critical in achieving the required tolerances.

If the required alignment standards are not met, it can cause a range of problems other than not cutting straight.

Bearings will fail faster, and blades will become blunt sooner because they do not run true in the cut. With more strain on all the parts, breakdowns and upkeep will increase.

To overcome this, some companies use very expensive equipment to get the alignment needed resulting in an excellent end-product but at a very high price.

Others cut costs fabricating machine frames from tube-steel and using cheap bearings. Such frames don't have the torsional strength to withstand the forces experienced by these machines and so the alignment of the system degrades over time.

Some systems integrate re-alignment tools into the bearing seats and while this may allow very skilled artisans to properly align a machine it can be dangerous when touched by those without the proper knowledge.

The result of improper alignment is that the machine will struggle to feed, blades will dish, power consumption will go up and bearing life suffers.

Wood-Mizer TITAN uses a strong and rigid frame made from 20mm thick plate. The components are pre-cut on CNC systems and then webbed and welded together for a rigid frame with exceptional alignment.

Bearings for both rollers and arbours are bolted into position with no need for further alignment procedures. This eliminates any guesswork when replacing components in the field.

The result is consistent accuracy without fail.
