New outlook report: Global Softwood Timber Supply - Latin America, Asia and Oceania

Softwood markets across Latin America and the Asia-Pacific are approaching a turning point. Some of the world’s lowest-cost plantation producers are increasingly linked to major importing markets where domestic supply growth is limited. With harvests expected to decline in key exporting regions, China remaining structurally dependent on imports, and Japan nearing peak production, the regional supply balance is likely to tighten through 2035—creating new risks and opportunities for producers, investors, traders, and wood consumers.

We are launching the third regional report in a three-part series analysing global softwood roundwood supply and pricing across all major regions. The series assesses forest area, growth, mortality, harvest intensity, supply chain costs, and log prices, alongside projections for supply and pricing through 2035.

Our latest outlook report, “Global Softwood Roundwood Supply – Latin America and Asia- Pacific”, examines how softwood supply across Latin America, Asia, and Oceania may evolve through 2035. The outlook differs substantially across regions.

The first report in the series, published in April, focused on North America, and the second, released in May, covered Europe and Russia. The latest report, covering Latin America and Asia-Pacific, has just been released.

The studies are conducted by Glen O’Kelly, O’Kelly Acumen (Stockholm, Sweden), and Håkan Ekström, Global Wood Trends (Seattle, USA).
