The Pest Control Operation (PCO) registration process is complete for most members of the timber treatment industry, who have received their certificates thanks to the dedicated service of the South African Wood Preservers Association (SAWPA).

SAWPA Executive Director Bruce Breedt reported that of the 83 of the 103 timber treatment plants operating in South Africa have submitted their applications to the Department of Agriculture, which has issued 64 certificates.

“SAWPA’s Bruce Breedt has gone the extra mile, and we would not be at this point without him.”

Bertus thanked Bruce for his “extraordinary service” in collecting and assessing timber treaters’ applications, taking them to the department himself, discussing progress with the registrar and relevant officials, and following up doggedly in a process that lasted many months.

“Bruce has gone the extra mile, and we would not be at this point without him. We’re extremely grateful for his work on behalf of not just SAWPA members, but other timber treaters too.

“Dolphin Bay and other SAWPA members are getting real value for the levies we’re paying.”

PCO certification is necessary for all South African timber treatment plants using CCA, creosote and most other wood preservatives.

Bruce pointed out that PCO certification has been a mammoth process for the department. “Please bear in mind that the wood preservation field for PCO registration is but a very small one among the many sectors and fields that must be certified. There are most likely hundreds, if not thousands of certificates which must be issued with respect to agriculture alone,” he said.
